South Korean Won Outlook Strengthened by AI-Driven Export Surge and BoK Rate Hike

Commerzbank reports that South Korea's exports surged by 52.3% year-on-year in the first 20 days of July, following a 60.4% increase in the same period of June. This marks the seventh consecutive month of double-digit export growth, primarily driven by robust demand for semiconductors and AI-related data center products. The resilience in external demand persists despite ongoing supply chain disruptions linked to renewed tensions in the Middle East [1].

On the monetary policy front, the Bank of Korea (BoK) raised its base rate by 25 basis points to 2.75% last week, marking its first rate hike in three years. The BoK cited elevated price pressures and financial stability risks stemming from a weak Korean Won and rising home prices as key reasons for the move. The central bank is expected to implement another 25 basis point hike this year, bringing the base rate to 3.0%, which aligns with its median rate projection in the latest dot plot [1].

In the foreign exchange market, the USD/KRW pair rose by 0.3% to 1,482 yesterday, reflecting a firmer US dollar. Despite this, Deputy Finance Minister Moon Ji-sung expressed optimism about the Korean Won's prospects, noting that increased corporate selling of USD forwards in the second half of the year could support KRW appreciation. He suggested that this activity might shift retail investor sentiment and further accelerate the Won's strengthening [1].

CONCLUSION

South Korea's export growth, fueled by AI and semiconductor demand, continues to support a positive outlook for the Korean Won. The Bank of Korea's rate hike and expected further tightening signal a proactive stance on inflation and financial stability. Market participants anticipate KRW appreciation in the coming months, driven by corporate USD-forward selling and resilient trade performance.
