Indonesian Rupiah Faces Pressure from US Inflation and Rising Oil Prices, MUFG Warns

MUFG’s Lloyd Chan highlights that the Indonesian Rupiah's recent recovery may be tested by upcoming US inflation data, which could reinforce elevated US yields and challenge the USD/IDR's break below the 17,700 level [1]. Chan notes that while Indonesia's domestic buffers remain supportive, their effectiveness is limited, especially as foreign ownership of outstanding SRBI has reached approximately 27%, nearing previous highs observed in late 2024 [1].

Chan further points out that Indonesia's commodity exports, including coal, palm oil, and base metals, are not sufficient to fully offset the deterioration in the oil and gas trade balance [1]. According to MUFG's calculations, Brent crude prices above US$82 per barrel begin to erode the cushioning effect provided by these exports [1]. If oil prices rise above US$100 per barrel and remain elevated for an extended period, concerns over Indonesia's fiscal risks and subsidy costs could resurface [1].

The report suggests that firmer US inflation could reinforce elevated US yields, posing a challenge to the Rupiah and potentially reversing its recent gains against the US dollar [1]. The combination of rising oil prices and limited domestic buffers increases the vulnerability of Indonesia's currency and fiscal position, especially if external pressures persist [1].

CONCLUSION

MUFG warns that the Indonesian Rupiah is vulnerable to external shocks, particularly from US inflation and rising oil prices. Elevated US yields and higher oil costs could undermine recent currency gains and revive fiscal concerns. Investors should monitor upcoming US inflation data and global oil price trends for further market direction.
