Japanese Yen Policy Risks Rise as Inflation and PMI Data Strengthen Rate Hike Case

Volkmar Baur at Commerzbank highlights that recent Japanese inflation and Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data support the possibility of an earlier-than-expected Bank of Japan (BoJ) rate hike, keeping Japanese Yen (JPY) policy risks in focus [1]. The July inflation figures show an overall rate rising to 1.9%, with core rates excluding fresh food at 1.8% and, additionally, excluding energy at 1.9%. These rates indicate price increases stabilizing near the BoJ's desired 2% target [1].

Baur notes that while the July inflation data may be of limited significance due to upcoming releases for Tokyo's August figures and nationwide August figures before the BoJ's September 18 policy meeting, the current numbers demonstrate that inflation would not hinder a potential rate hike, even as soon as September [1].

Additionally, positive PMI data released this morning reinforce the case for a rate hike. The manufacturing sector PMI improved to 55.1, considered a very good level, while the services PMI rose by more than one index point to 52.3, signaling continued positive economic momentum [1].

Despite these supportive data points, Commerzbank still expects the BoJ to raise interest rates in the fourth quarter. However, Baur concedes that the latest figures do not preclude a rate hike as early as four weeks from now, suggesting heightened policy risk and potential market volatility around the September BoJ meeting [1].

CONCLUSION

Recent inflation and PMI data in Japan have strengthened the case for a Bank of Japan rate hike, potentially as early as September. While Commerzbank maintains its expectation for a fourth-quarter move, the data suggest that policy risks and market attention will remain elevated ahead of the September 18 BoJ meeting.
